How to Choose a New Air Conditioner Unit

Choosing a suitable air conditioner unit can be overwhelming due to the vast range of options available on the market.

Choosing a suitable air conditioner unit can be overwhelming due to the vast range of options available on the market. Understanding the various types, sizes, and features is essential to creating a comfortable living environment.

Whether it's time to replace an old unit or install a new one, consider the following factors when choosing a new air conditioner unit:

The size of the unit

Matching the air conditioner unit with the room size is vital to create optimal comfort. If the unit is bigger, it will adequately cool the space. Conversely, a unit that is too large will cool the area too quickly, cause high humidity levels, and result in a damp and clammy atmosphere.

Room air conditioners' cooling capacity is expressed in Btu per hour and ranges from 5,000 to 25,000 Btu. For most rooms up to 875 square feet, an air conditioner rated at 15,000 Btu should suffice.

Some formulas compare the room size to Btu capacity. However, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) provides a more comprehensive formula that includes sun exposure, insulation levels, window area, and room usage.

Energy efficiency

Manufacturers are required to list the energy rating on the unit, known as the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER). It is calculated by dividing the cooling capacity by the electrical power required to run the unit. Units with higher EER ratings are more energy-efficient, with most 115V units having an EER of 9 or 10.

Units with an EER above 10 are considered highly efficient, with the most efficient units having an EER in the low 12s. While more efficient units may cost more initially, they can ultimately result in significant long-term savings and reduce carbon footprint.

To find the estimated operating cost of a unit, check the Energy Guide label.

Control features

Selecting the proper control features can enhance comfort and convenience during the summer. Multi-speed fans and adjustable thermostats allow one to fine-tune the cooling output and switch to quieter settings when desired, which is particularly important for bedrooms.

Digital controls offer precise temperature settings and preset schedules for powering the unit on or off at desired times. For the sake of convenience, the location of the controls, whether at the top, bottom, or sides, is also worth considering. A TV-style remote control can be a good option.

In addition, adjustable louvers that allow for directional airflow are beneficial, especially for an ample space that needs cooling.

Choose a stress-free installation

After purchasing the desired air conditioner unit, remember the importance of professional installation. A properly installed unit will ensure optimal performance and efficiency, while reducing the risk of malfunctions and breakdowns.

A professional technician can also help conduct regular maintenance in the future and identify any potential problems that may arise.
