Furnace Installation and Repair in Summerlin, Anthem, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, and Las Vegas

What is a furnace and why is it important?

Furnaces usually use gas, electricity, propane, fuel oil, or another source of energy to create heat for your home.  These units are connected to a central heating system, producing large amounts of heat, which is then pushed through a ventilation system to move throughout your home.

A thermostat controls the desired temperature.  Turning it up or down will either increase or decrease the temperature by turning the furnace on to create more heat or shutting it down to lower the temperature within your home.

The best furnace for your home is determined by which fuel source is available in your area at the most affordable cost, including natural gas, oil, propane, and electricity.  Our professional staff can help determine which is the best option for your family operating within your budget.  Installation of a new unit or the repair of an existing furnace is just a phone call away.

Signs that a furnace needs repair:

Abnormal furnace smells:

Your furnace will produce a strange smell the first time it is used every year.  If you notice smells at other times of the year, this could be an indication of operational issues and possible safety hazards.

Difficulty starting the unit:

Not being able to start a furnace is frustrating. It might be caused by an electrical surge or just one of your system’s safety controls.  Whatever the cause, it is time to call us.

Dust around furnace vents:

If you have noticed an unusual amount of dust coming from your furnace vents, this may be a sign that your furnace is unable to clean the air in your home.  The first step is to change your filters.  If it continues, is to give us a call.

Yellow pilot light:

Check your pilot light by looking inside the front panel of your furnace.  If your pilot light is yellow, it could be a sign of leaking carbon monoxide from the heat exchange.  This is not a do-it-yourself problem!  Call Forecast Heating, Cooling, and Refrigeration immediately.

High utility bills:

It is a good idea to keep track of your monthly heating bills.  Comparing them from month-to-month and year-to-year is important.  A steady rise in your heating bills or a huge spike that can’t be explained by the weather is a good sign that your furnace has developed a problem and needs some attention.

Difference between gas and electric furnaces

An electric furnace is more efficient than a gas furnace.  But remember, energy efficiency is the amount of energy that the furnace turns into heat, not the rate at which it heats your home.  Electric furnaces convert most of their energy into heat; on the other hand, gas furnaces generally heat homes more quickly than electric furnaces.

Gas furnaces heat your home faster because the temperature produced is hotter than the heat produced by electric coils.  With the hotter heat and the cheaper cost of natural gas, using a gas furnace in a colder climate might be a better choice.  In a warmer climate where there is less demand for heat, an electric furnace might be a better option due to the lower initial cost and the reduced maintenance needs over the system's lifespan.

Initially, electric furnaces are less expensive to purchase than gas furnaces.  They usually are cheaper to install as well.  But over the lifetime of the units, the electricity needed to run an electric furnace will probably be more expensive than the natural gas required to run a gas furnace.

An electric furnace is easier to maintain and requires less professional attention than a gas furnace.

Gas furnaces usually last about half as long as electric furnaces due to the additional maintenance required to keep the unit running properly.

An electric furnace is generally quieter than a gas furnace due to the simplicity of the design.  They have fewer moving parts, no vents, and no burner, creating a quieter furnace overall.  Gas furnaces are usually the noisiest when the burner ignites with the loud rushing sound as they start up.
