Why Does the Air Conditioner Smell Like Mildew?

Mildew or mold can cause numerous health problems, so addressing the source of the smell is crucial.

If the AC is turned on and a mildew smell is present, the origin of this odor might be a concern. A musty smell could indicate a mildew issue. Some mildew problems can be resolved with a bit of investigation and cleaning, while more complex mold issues may require professional advice.

Mildew or mold can cause numerous health problems, so addressing the source of the smell is crucial. It's necessary to identify the cause of the mold buildup and then work to eradicate the problem.

Several factors could be contributing to the mildew scent:

Drip Pan

The mildew smell might originate from mildew in the AC system. Begin by checking if the drip pan has stagnant water sitting in it. A blockage in the condensate drain line could be the cause. If the drip pan, where the condensation collects, is not draining correctly, unblocking the clog will help. The pan can be washed with bleach and dried thoroughly. If the condensate drain line is the issue, replacing it should prevent further problems and eliminate the smell. Cleaning the evaporator coils with a bleach and water solution, soaking them for 10 minutes or more, and using a fan to dry out any remaining moisture in the AC unit is also recommended.

Ducts and Vents

Another potential source of the mildew smell is the ducts and vents. High levels of humidity in the home can lead mold to grow anywhere and become a problem quickly. Having a professional inspect the vents is the best way to determine if mold is present. If mold is found in the vents, professional cleaning is the most effective solution.

System Size

Consider the possibility that the AC system may be too large for the size of the home. An oversized AC system brings new air in so quickly that it does not properly dehumidify the air passing through. Excess moisture in the home causes mold to grow, resulting in a musty smell. Areas such as windows and doors should be checked for mold, which can be cleaned with a mold removal spray. Consulting an AC specialist to see if installing a smaller unit may help as well.
